Decommissioning and remediation for Eaton Corporation
Client: Eaton Corporation
URS provided decommissioning and remediation services for all facilities at Eaton Corporation’s automotive factory in Montornés del Vallés, Barcelona, Spain.
The site had been used to manufacture engine valves for more than 25 years but was forced to close down in 2006, after the soil had become contaminated with cutting fluid, hydraulic and fuel oils, chrome and chlorinated solvents.
URS was commissioned to manage the entire project and represented the client throughout the different phases, as the Eaton division responsible for the project did not have presence in Spain. URS reported directly to Eaton in the USA.
The main project objective was to obtain both, the approval of the site decontamination process by relevant government agencies and the acceptance by the new site owner, who purchased it before the remediation process began.
Other specific tasks carried out by URS included environmental impact assessment after the site was closed, the dismantling and demolition of all facilities which occupied an area of 22,000m², and soil remediation.
All work was completed satisfactorily, meeting both Eaton's and the relevant government agencies' expectations.
