Engineering, construction, start-up and O&M services for Barcelona Airport's Baggage Handling System
Client: AENA
URS provided a full range of engineering design, construction management and overall technical support for the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at the new terminal building.
AENA, the company who owns and manages all of Spain’s airports, awarded URS the technical assessment contract for the BHS at Barcelona Airport in 2002.
The contract included basic engineering design and detailed engineering review, construction management, and start-up, operation and maintenance support. The scope of work involved the integration of the new and existing system, including the construction of an underground tunneled connection between terminals. The construction and installation of the BHS progressed alongside the construction of the new terminal building and URS made sure both projects were carried out simultaneously.
We also ensured our work was fully compliant with all the terms of the Barcelona Airport Master Plan, a significant document of major importance to the airport’s future development.
The project, which is expected to be completed in 2010, presents URS as one of the preferred engineering consultancies for delivering this type of specialised system within the Spanish market.
